Our School

At True Path Martial Arts, we envision martial arts as an exciting and unique “pathway” to self-improvement. Through the practice of Taekwondo techniques, the student not only acquires skill, but also develops greater confidence and focus, improved fitness and flexibility, and reduced stress levels.

Our guiding philosophy is one of providing an encouraging environment within a traditional structure. Our technique-driven classes are exciting and stress skill acquisition, positive attitude, and maximum effort. Children are encouraged to take ownership in their training and they take great pride in their accomplishments. Our adult students share a common purpose to work toward each successive rank, which, along with the discipline involved in martial arts, helps them reach and maintain both fitness and personal goals. It is a workout unlike any other!

4Our school stresses high standards. Students progress at their own individual pace and are awarded belt ranks based on skill acquisition, attitude, and performance of techniques they have learned. Students are not given their belts, but rather, they earn them through diligent practice. Most important, however, is the realization that true success comes from the changes experienced by the student during the process of achieving each belt rank. When a student follows a True Path, success is found in the journey, rather than the destination!

FAQ

  • What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. Loosely translated, it means "the way of the foot and fist". Students learn a variety of kicks, hand techniques, and “forms” or patterns, as well as sparring with protective gear.

  • What ages can participate?

6To begin training in martial arts, a child must be able to pay attention, and give their best effort during class. At True Path Martial Arts, we begin training at approximately age 6, depending on maturity. Beyond that, you can begin at any age! No previous experience is necessary. As always, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

  • What kind of physical condition do I need to be in?

There is no need to be in great shape or extremely flexible to begin martial arts training. While we do advise that you consult a physician prior to beginning any exercise program, our training is all based on individual fitness levels. As you train, your physical stamina and flexibility will gradually increase with regular workouts.

  • What are the costs involved?

Expenses for training include tuition, uniforms, sparring gear, and testing fees. Optional expenses may include specialty gear and uniforms, special interest seminars, and weapons training.

  • What is testing?

Formal testing is held the first Saturday of each month for students who are eligible and approved to test. During the test, students are asked to perform the techniques learned at their belt level, and they will perform a board break from their belt level curriculum. Yellow belts and above will also spar one round with an opponent. Testing is an excellent way for students to rise to a challenge, and reap the rewards of hard work and training. Belt awards ceremony is held the following Wednesday after testing and students are formally recognized for their achievement.

  • Is sparring required?

Yes. At True Path Martial Arts, we believe that sparring is a crucial component to putting learned techniques into practice. A student cannot learn to defend themselves if they have never faced an opponent. All of our sparring is under very controlled conditions. Students are required to wear full safety gear, including helmets, chest protectors, and arm/hand/leg/foot protection. Additionally, students are closely coached and monitored during matches, not only to assure safety, but also to help the student learn sparring techniques during the match. While you can never completely rule out injuries, it’s much more likely your child will be hurt during normal play outside of Taekwondo class than during sparring class.

  • How long does it take to reach Black Belt?

The time it takes to reach any rank varies with the individual student.. After a student reaches the minimum number of classes required to test for rank promotion, they are evaluated and invited to test when the instructors determine that they are ready. Students progress at their own rate and we ensure that the student has learned their techniques at each rank before promoting them to the next level.

  • How often should a student attend class?

We recommend at least 3 times per week consistently to maintain progress. We offer a flexible schedule that will accommodate very busy families.
